The Role

At Matrix Renewables we are looking for a highly motivated individual to play a key role to be responsible for managing our Project Development Division in Europe & LATAM. Based in Madrid, the VP of Development will initially be responsible for overseeing development of Matrix’s portfolio of projects in Chile, Spain & Italy, and later in other markets which Matrix may enter.

The Candidate should use their experience and intelligence to identify risks, manage Matrix’s portfolio, manage the Matrix development team and manage Matrix’s developers through JVs and co-development agreements.

The performance of the candidate will be assessed vs. yearly budget RTB MWs and CAPEX commitments, their ability to manage the development capex requirements, and guiding Matrix in understanding the risks that these projects face and solve them. This will all be done against a backdrop of working within a very close, multi-disciplinary team with the expectation that the Candidate always fosters and embodies Matrix’s values.

The candidate should be mature enough to be able to represent Matrix’s interests with local teams and stakeholders, being confident to proactively defend Matrix even if that position is opposed by the developer or stakeholders. The Candidate should have a good network of connections in the development and electricity industry in Chile, Spain and Italy. The candidate must be familiar with all aspects of the development of renewable energy PV projects and must execute the closings for the SPV/projects procedures. This will also require that the candidate be fully comfortable managing Matrix’s position with partners through enforcing our contract with them, so a working knowledge of SPAs, DSAs and JDAs is necessary.

During the development phase, the candidate will collaborate with in-house Matrix and external teams to ensure that projects obtain all the permits, authorizations, and licenses necessary to reach Ready to Build (“RTB”) status, on time, leading the SPV/project closing actions.

Key activities and responsibilities:

Lead & grow the PV development team to reach Matrix targets.

Represent MATRIX in EU & LATAM before local authorities, at political and regulatory level, landowners & local communities. The candidate should have experience working with stakeholders and be comfortable in that setting, able to manage sometimes difficult or confrontational situations. Industry contacts with large generators, developers or distribution companies will be a positive

Ensure that Matrix development team is tracking development status of projects in its pipeline, liaising with developers to help and assure that the delivery of projects to RTB reaches on time. Delivery of budget committed with our investors is the main key responsibility of this role

Project scheduling management through activities definition, sequencing, resources, and duration estimation.

Leading & closing Due Diligences and active red flag solving in order to close and acquire efficiently the projects when reaching RTB to our developers. Assure closings are done & executed on time.

Leading & growing our new greenfield projects portfolio.

Budgeting and funding management. The candidate shall be entitled to control the funding activities and budgeting to follow what is stipulated in the contracts, having also control on the Matrix “money at risk” exposure per developer.

Assist the finance, EPC & accounting teams, to close the respective contract / deals.

Lead the development & DD team to analyze the different M&A opportunities.

Reporting: Manage reporting efficiently on time and with the expected requirements

Management of community and public relations in respect of the Project

Help to implement ESG Company policy at local level in compliance with modern standards, regulations, and best industry practice. Flag to HQ any ESG issues as soon as possible, gather information related to them and where instructed interact with stakeholders if appropriate

Ensure the highest compliance about anticorruption practices along the relationship with all the stakeholders

General Skills / Attributes:

Master’s degree in Engineering, law or business

10 years of energy industry experience in a project development, project administration, project management, asset management, contract administration, deal execution, project finance or other commercial role

Full understanding of the development, construction, and operational milestones & permits for solar projects

Budgeting & financial funding controlling skills

Team management

Comfortable attending lobbying events both at the national level and local, in both political and civil service spheres

Experience with dealing with utilities, distributors and generators and a good network of contacts in those companies

An ability to perform at a high level in a matrixed organization, working in inter-departmental teams to achieve objectives

Solid communication skills: capability to establish technical discussions in different cultural environments

Fluent in English and Spanish
